Hice servicio en un orfanato para un verano en las montañas de Andes del Peru. Hubo solo 16 chicos, un supervisor y tres voluntarios, que se convirtió a una familia. Me sentía como una hermana mayor y una valiosa influencia de su crecimiento y desarrollo.
Valerio, está a la izquierda, tiene 5 años. Tuvimos una baraja de cartas para jugar cuando los chicos había terminado sus tareas. Valerio estaba a cargo de las cartas. Mantuvo las tarjetas en el mismo cajón, “Entonces no perderlos,” decía.
Al dar a Valerio una tarea pequeña, hemos sido capaces de enseñarle la gran lección de vida de responsabilidad.
I volunteered at an orphanage for a summer in the Andes Mountains of Peru. With only 16 boys, one supervisor and 3 volunteers, we became a family. I felt like an older sister and a valuable influence on their growth and development.
Valerio, pictured on the far left, is 5. We had one pack of cards to play games with when the boys had finished their homework and Valerio was in charge of them. He kept the cards nestled in the same drawer, “So not to lose them,” he would say.
By giving Valerio such a small task, we were able to teach him the big life-lesson of responsibility.
